Axum (also Aksum), once the capital of the Axumite Empire (100–940 CE), is now a small city of 56,000 famous for its ancient & historic monuments. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980.

The main attraction is the Northern Stelae Park, a staggering collection of ancient monuments. Other sites include St Mary of Zion church said to contain the Ark of the Covenant, the Ezana Stone, King Bazen's Tomb, the Queen of Sheba's Bath & Palace, the monasteries of Abba Pentalewon and Abba Liqanos and the Lioness of Gobedra rock art.
