Bahir Dar, Amharic for "sea shore", is aptly named for its location on Lake Tana, the largest lake in Ethiopia, dotted with ~forty ancient monasteries dating back as far as the fourteenth century and the source of the Blue Nile River.

Beautifully developed with palm lined streets, easy access to boat tours of Lake Tana and near to the spectacular Blue Nile Falls, Bahir Dar is a city not to be missed. In 2002 it was awarded the UNESCO Cities for Peace Prize for addressing the challenges of rapid urbanization.
