Gondar (also Gonder) is known as the Camelot of Ethiopia. It was founded around 1635 by Emperor Fasilides to serve as the capital city, replacing the roaming previous roaming capital. It remained Ethiopia's capital until 1855. It was the home of many emperors and empresses, many of whom built their own palaces within the Royal Enclosure.

Gondar's Royal Enclosure was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979
